Seniors, it’s time to lock in and finish your academic year strong. In a recent episode of our Countdown2College podcast, we talked with EducationQuest college planning specialist Lizzy Waite about how seniors can avoid senioritis and stay on track to college like a pro. Just follow the roadmap below!
#DoTheFAFSA and Finish College Applications
At this point in the year, you should be finalizing college applications and completing the FAFSA. Even if you’re still deciding what school to attend, completing the FAFSA as early as possible gives you the best shot at financial aid and scholarships. Spring deadlines can sneak up quickly, so take time now to finalize applications and submit any remaining forms.
Review Financial Aid Offers Carefully
Once colleges send out financial aid offers, students and families should review them side by side. Pay close attention to the breakdown of aid, specifically the proportion of grants and scholarships versus loans, and examine the actual out-of-pocket cost each year.
Keep Scholarship Deadlines in Sight
Spring is a busy time for scholarships. Seniors should check with the financial aid offices of the colleges they’re considering, utilize free tools like ScholarshipQuest, and discuss local opportunities with school counselors. A helpful rule of thumb: scholarships should NEVER cost money to apply for.
Stay on Top of Housing
Many colleges open housing applications shortly after students are admitted. Since housing is typically available on a first-come, first-served basis, applying early gives students more options. Keep track of deadlines, check your email frequently, and regularly monitor student portals.
Beat Senioritis and Finish Strong
As graduation approaches, maintaining motivation can be challenging. Keep the finish line in mind and don’t forget all the hard work you’ve put in to get here. Break big tasks into smaller steps, stay organized, and celebrate small wins to make the next few months a breeze.
The spring semester and the end of your high school career will go by fast. Cherish the memories you’ll continue to make and stay focused on your goals.
