Level Up Your College Game This Summer - image of two students picking up trash.

Summer break is practically here! That means more time for road trips, being out in the sun, and sleeping in every morning. This is also the perfect opportunity to get involved and take your college game to the next level. Whether you’re aiming for scholarships, preparing college applications, or just want to do something meaningful, volunteering and service work can seriously set you apart.

How Does Volunteering Open Doors?

When you give back to your community, you’re not just helping others. You’re growing your skills, your confidence, and your character. Volunteering shows colleges and scholarship committees the kind of leader and community member you are. It highlights your passion and commitment, and that can help you stand out big-time on applications.

How Do I Get Started?

Even if you’ve never officially “volunteered” before, it’s never too late to start. Take some time to research volunteer opportunities in your local community and find something that you really care about. If you’re totally lost, your school counselor may know of local organizations that are always looking for volunteers. Another great tool is VolunteerMatch.org, which can pair you with opportunities that match your skills and passions. Alternatively, you can start a service project yourself!

Need Some Inspo?

Try one of these:

🍎 Help at a local food bank or shelter.

📚 Tutor other students in a subject you’re good at.

🗑️ Organize a park or neighborhood trash clean-up with friends.

👕 Host a clothing donation drive.

Track Your Hours

Hot tip: Keep a running list of the hours you have volunteered, the names of the organizations, and what you worked on! These will be important when it comes time to apply for scholarships and college. You can create that list and track your other activities by using our Activities Resume.

Volunteering this summer is one of the smartest ways to level up your resume, your applications, and yourself. The skills, connections, and confidence you build along the way will stick with you long after summer ends. Make this summer count (and don’t forget to rest, too)!
