In reality, fraternities and sororities offer so much more. In a recent episode of Countdown2College, Gage spoke with EducationQuest Communications Specialist Kayla Enfield about her sorority experience, what recruitment is really like, and how Greek life shaped her college experience.

What is Greek life really like?

One of the biggest misconceptions about Greek life is that it’s only about social events. While there are opportunities to make friends and attend activities, academics are a major priority. Many fraternities and sororities have GPA requirements, academic standards, and resources to help members stay on track. Students often find classmates in the same major, form study groups, and encourage one another to succeed in the classroom.

Will joining a sorority or fraternity help me make friends?

For many students, one of the biggest challenges of starting college is finding a sense of belonging. Kayla shared that joining a sorority helped her find a close-knit community during her first year of college. Greek life can offer opportunities to meet people you may not have crossed paths with otherwise and build friendships through shared experiences. Although friendships don’t happen overnight, becoming involved in a chapter can make it easier to connect with others and feel more at home on campus.

What is Greek recruitment like?

At many colleges, traditional recruitment takes place over several days, giving students the opportunity to learn about each chapter’s values, philanthropy, and member experience before deciding which chapters they’re most interested in. Some sororities may also offer Continuous Open Bidding (COB), which provides another opportunity to join after primary recruitment through a more personal recruitment process.

Every student’s college experience is different, and Greek life isn’t the right fit for everyone. But if you’re curious, it’s worth exploring options. Recruitment allows students to learn more about each chapter, meet current members, ask questions, and decide whether Greek life is the right fit for them.
