College is a BIG life transition. It’s totally normal to be scared. If you’re feeling stressed about the unknowns, trust me, you’re not alone. We asked high schoolers, “What scares you about college?” and here’s what they had to say, plus some tips to help you chill and take it one step at a time.

Fear #1. Not Knowing How College Works or What Classes to Take

New environments are confusing, especially when you’re not sure where to start. The good news? Colleges offer TONS of support for just this reason! Orientation programs, academic advisors, and peer mentors will guide you through enrolling in classes, understanding degree requirements, and exploring campus life. Never hesitate to reach out or ask questions, everyone on campus wants you to succeed!

Fear #2. Making New Friends

Meeting new people can feel awkward, but remember, they’re in the same boat as you! Don’t be afraid to attend some welcome events, join a club that looks interesting, or hit up a campus coffee spot. You’ll find your people and grow your support network with time!

Fear #3. Tuition Costs

Tuition isn’t always cheap… But a price tag doesn’t have to keep you from your dreams! Scholarships, financial aid, work-study, and grants are all there to help you. Fear #4. Picking the Wrong Major

You’re not alone if you’re scared to pick the wrong major! Many students change their majors after realizing it just doesn’t fit their desires, and that’s totally okay. The truth is, you’re not supposed to have life figured out yet. Your goals and aspirations can change. Try taking different classes to see what sticks with you and talk to a career counselor on campus if you’re lost.

Fear #5. Balancing Studying and Activities

College can be a LOT of fun, but it also tends to get busy fast. It’s going to take some time to get used to your schedule, but balance is a skill that you can build. Use a planner, set small goals, and figure out what study style works for you. And if you’re really struggling, many colleges offer tutoring or time management workshops to help you out. Just remember, it’s about progress, not perfection.

It’s okay to be nervous about college—big changes are always a little scary. Just know that from your professors to your classmates, you’re not alone. There’s help everywhere, and before you know it, the stuff you’ve been so worried about will feel like second nature. Take a deep breath, trust yourself, and dive in!
