Starting college can evoke a mix of emotions, ranging from excitement to uncertainty. Suddenly, you’re managing your own schedule, meeting new people, and figuring out how to balance independence with responsibility. In our recent Countdown2College podcast, Gabby Perez-Patterson, assistant director of admissions at Chadron State College, shared advice for overcoming those “campus scaries” so you can make the most of your first year.
Finding Your Rhythm
One of the biggest surprises about college is how much freedom you have, but also how much personal responsibility. You’re in charge of your schedule, meals, and priorities. While liberating and exciting, it can also feel overwhelming. The key is to find your rhythm. Establish a daily routine that strikes a balance between classes and studying, social time, and rest. Give yourself grace as you adjust; independence takes practice.
Roommates 101
Dorm rooms are tight quarters! Sharing a room for the first time can be both fun and challenging. Open communication makes all the difference. Discuss expectations, such as guest arrangements, household chores, and quiet hours, to prevent tension later. If disagreements arise, remain calm, listen attentively, and work together to find a mutually beneficial solution. Most residence halls have staff who can help mediate. Learning to compromise and respect boundaries now will help you well beyond college.
Taming the Time Monster
College schedules differ from those in high school. Some days, you may only have one class, which makes it easy to procrastinate. Treat weekdays like workdays: attend class, block out study time, and utilize tools like planners or phone calendars to stay on track. Build in breaks, too. Taking care of yourself is just as important as keeping up with assignments. A little structure goes a long way toward keeping stress low and productivity high.
Beat Burnout Before It Starts
Coursework can pile up quickly, especially when projects and exams overlap. Break large assignments into smaller steps and set realistic goals. Avoid late-night cram sessions by starting early and keeping track of due dates. If you need help, don’t hesitate to ask for it. Tutors, writing labs, and professors are there to support you. Using those resources isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s how successful students stay ahead.
Finding Your People
The first few weeks can feel lonely, but remember you’re not the only one starting fresh. Join a club, attend campus events, or participate in intramural sports. Getting involved helps you make connections and find a sense of belonging. The sooner you step out of your comfort zone, the sooner campus will start to feel like home.
Keeping Calm and Carrying On
Between academics, new relationships, and the pressure to keep up, college can be a stressful experience. Find healthy ways to cope, whether it’s exercising, reading, or spending time outdoors. And don’t hesitate to use counseling or student support services if you’re struggling. Asking for help shows strength and self-awareness, not weakness.
Staying Connected But Present
It’s easier than ever to stay in touch with friends and family back home, but don’t let homesickness keep you from engaging in your new life. Check in regularly, but be intentional about being present on campus. Growth happens when you give yourself the space to build your own community.
Sleep, Snacks, and Self-Care
Pulling all-nighters might sound like a college tradition, but lack of sleep affects everything—your mood, focus, and grades. Prioritize rest, eat balanced meals, and stay physically active. It’s all about balance: enjoy pizza nights and dessert runs, but make sure you’re fueling yourself for success.
