One of the biggest challenges of starting college is figuring out where you belong. In a recent episode of Countdown2College, Gage spoke with Wedley Martin, a sophomore at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, about honor societies and how they can help students build community, stay motivated, and strengthen their college experience.

Wedley is a double major in music education and music business, plays multiple instruments, and serves as president of Upsilon Nu, a Black honor society. He said getting involved early helped him build connections and find opportunities on campus.

What is an honor society?

An honor society is an organization that recognizes students for high achievement. Wedley described honor societies as a place where students can find support, encouragement, and peers who share similar goals. Since college often means greater independence, honor societies can help students stay connected and supported.

Why join an honor society?

Wedley said the biggest benefit of joining is the sense of community. Finding that kind of support system on your own can be difficult, especially in a new environment. Being part of a group that shares your values and encourages growth can make a real difference during stressful or lonely moments.

Are there different types of honor societies?

Not all honor societies are the same. There are several different types, each with its own focus and purpose, including the following.

  • Academic honor societies focus on GPA and academic performance (some require a 3.0 GPA or higher).
  • Leadership-based honor societies typically feature students with strong campus involvement and leadership skills.
  • Service-based honor societies focus on community engagement and volunteering.

No matter the type, the common theme is community and shared support.

How do you join an honor society?

Most honor societies invite students to join after they meet certain requirements, often based on GPA or campus involvement. Wedley recommends attending campus organization fairs or reaching out to groups directly to learn more. Most organizations are happy to explain their requirements and help students get started.

How do you stay in an honor society?

The biggest responsibility for students is maintaining good academic standing by meeting GPA requirements, attending meetings, participating in events, and representing the organization well on campus. As Wedley emphasized, honor societies aren’t something you join; they’re something you take pride in and actively represent through your actions.

What happens if your GPA drops?

Falling below the GPA requirement doesn’t always mean the student is removed from the honor society. Wedley said many organizations focus on supporting students rather than shutting them out by offering check-ins, tutoring, and study support. They encourage members to communicate early if challenges arise. The goal is to help students get back on track and continue their membership.

Final advice!

Wedley’s final message to students was clear: get involved! It’s normal to feel some nerves during your first year, but college is full of opportunities. Getting involved, joining organizations, and using campus resources can only improve your overall experience. Honor societies are one way to build connections, grow as a student, and create relationships that will last beyond graduation.
