If you plan to attend college during the 2008-09 academic year, it's time to think about completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) - the application for federal, state and college-based financial aid.
You should complete the FAFSA before your college's priority filing date which could fall as soon as March 1. Contact your college to ask about their priority date.
The Department of Education recommends that you apply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. You may also complete a PDF version of the FAFSA which you must mail in, or you can request a paper version by calling the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 800-433-3242.
The application process is fairly simple – if you're prepared. See the "Completing the FAFSA" section of this website for free FAFSA tools including:
- Financial Aid Video – explains the financial aid process and the sections of the FAFSA
- FAFSA Checklist – provides a list of items you need to gather before completing the FAFSA
- FAFSA Tutorial – provides user-friendly explanations of each FAFSA question. You can pull it up in a separate window as you complete the online FAFSA
- College Funding Estimator – estimates your FAFSA results
You can also watch a one-hour webcast replay of Countdown to College which aired on NET in December, 2007. A panel of experts addressed viewers’ questions about college planning and financial aid.
